Una obsesión con el dinero, un amante infiel, el embarazo accidental de un amigo, la misoginia, la soledad, la muerte … Estos son solo algunos de los temas de ‘LONER’: el segundo y oscuro álbum de la compositora / productora Caroline Rose. Armada con un arsenal de nuevos instrumentos y equipos, una sensación cada vez mayor de «ahhh fuck it», dos años de exploración y un sentido del humor perverso, Rose ofrece un conjunto de canciones serias presentadas en un envoltorio pop alegre y angustioso. Porque, como Rose dice, «a veces las canciones tristes solo necesitan un cóctel».
Caroline Rose ha estado ganando fans y cerrando espectáculos en todo el país en su primera gira desde el lanzamiento reciente de su disco “LONER” en febrero de este año, a través de New West. Como describe Pitchfork, Rose «usa su ingenio mordaz para enfrentarse a temas serios, y exorcizar sus traumas con ganchos y humor» en “LONER”. Es una idea magistralmente ejecutada con los singles anteriores «Money», «Soul No. 5» y «Getting To Me», recientemente reconocida en el New York Times Magazine. En estos días, Rose presenta el videoclip «Bikini», que ha dirigido ella misma, como hizo con su videoclip «Soul No. 5». Ella misma lo explica a continuación: «Gran parte de mi estética tiende a ser irónica, así que quería tomar un tema serio, en este caso la misoginia, y darle la vuelta para reírme de él. Creo que la sátira se puede usar como una herramienta increíble para quitarle el poder a los poderosos cuando sea necesario. Era importante para mí asegurarme de que el video un sentido positivo del cuerpo. Cuando pensamos en ‘chicas en bikinis’, la tendencia es ver a modelos altas y blancas, con cuerpos perfectos. Si lo hacía así, sabía que se estaría perdiendo el sentido de la canción. Tomo muchas influencias de las películas, y puedes ver mucha influencia de Almodóvar aquí. Tuve una idea bastante concreta para hacer que el video fuera brillante y alegre, como una mezcla entre viejas interpretaciones de televisión en los años 60 y 70 y el juego The Price Is Right. Almodóvar es un maestro en el uso de elementos visuales para mejorar una historia seria. Los colores que usa son muy parecidos a sus personajes, vibrantes y extravagantes. Aquí, utilizo algo similar, como herramienta creativa para mejorar el absurdo de una situación realista «.
Rose continúa de gira con “LONER”, directos que pasarán en julio por los festivales españoles FIB (Benicàssim, 19 de julio) y Barranco Festival (Fitero, 21 julio), así como la sala Dabadaba de San Sebastián (20 julio). Se agregaron varias fechas más a la gira anunciada previamente en junio y hará una gira por Europa y el Reino Unido en julio.

THE INTERVIEW
We still love the sound of Caroline Rose in this new album «LONER” (2018), which, although still in the same musical line achieved in your previous album «I Will Not Be Afraid» (2014), we noticed something different, perhaps a sound more personal, perhaps more melancholic, perhaps more authentic and more mature, … It true that something has changed What is it? What do you consider that has evolved in your music in these last two years?
I think I’ve just grown as a person and the music reflects that. It’s a similar narrative style to my older stuff but I feel a lot more free to do what I want sonically.
Your last album «LONER» contains fantastic songs, precious, intimate, enveloping nostalgic and very evocative darkness air almost melancholic. Songs, where not only music is given importance, but you have also worked on the lyrics in a special way. What can you tell us about it? What inspires you when it comes to making your songs?
Stylistically I pull a lot from directors and authors. Almodovar and David Lynch, writers like Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Hunter S. Thompson, etc. Stories and storytellers who can wield an interesting narrative but who also aren’t afraid to inject their own personal weirdness into it. But obviously, the stories themselves come from my own experiences.
Why have you titled «LONER» to this album? What expectations do you have with «LONER»?
I really tried not to have any, really, which is why the support has been a very pleasant surprise. I’m so glad people are reacting to it in a positive way! The title is just meant to poke fun at myself.
Is this your first time in Spain. What do you think about the Spanish crowd? What do expect from them?
It will be our first time in Spain! I can’t say I expect much, but given the only Spaniards I know are Hinds, we’re coming ready to party.
What are your plans for this 2018? We suppose that to turn around the world, but something that you can advance us? Important events?
We’re on tour for the rest of the year. Literally every month is booked out, so we will be keeping very busy!
Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
I think the future of music is brighter and bolder than ever. It very exciting times to be an artist.
How is a normal day in the life of Caroline Rose?
Get up, make coffee, skip showering, get into the van, drive 6 hours, play a show. Rinse and repeat!
What do you think about the current economic and social situation in Spain, Europe, United States of America and in the World in general?
The world is completely inexorably fucked.

Could you tell us about…
…a book?: “Eileen” by Ottessa Moshfegh. I’m reading it now and she is wonderfully morbid and at times hilarious.
…a movie?: “The Skin I Live In” by Pedro Almodovar. One of my favorite movies. It’s terrifying and absurd.
…a song?: “Rock Lobster” by The B-52s.
…an album?: Really digging the Superorganism album. We also just listened to Suuns «Hold/Still»…A personal favorite.
… a group or soloist ?: Soccer Mommy is my favorite new artist right now, I find her very relatable and she finds humor in sadness, which isn’t easy to translate.
…a hobby?: Cross-stitching! It helps pass the time on long drives.
